Wellington Citadel Band
The Wellington Citadel Band
Since its formation in 1883, the Wellington Citadel Band of The Salvation Army has remained at the forefront of the brass band movement inNew Zealand. The band has been blessed with a series of outstanding conductors, soloists and members who have used their musical talents to the glory of God.
Currently under the leadership of Bandmaster Glenn Richards, the Wellington Citadel Band provides musical support to civic and national Salvation Army events. In addition, the band is involved in worship services each Sunday at Wellington City Corps and makes regular visits to hospitals and rest homes.
The band has always been innovative in communicating the Christian message through music to diverse audiences. In recent years, this has included a fusion of band, dance, kapa haka (Maori performing arts) and vocal performances.
Since 1949, the Wellington Citadel Band has travelled widely, including two trips toAustralia(1949, 1964), a ‘world tour’ in 1968 of theUnited States,Canada and the United Kingdom. It has undertaken visits to Japan(1979, 1985, 2007) and a tour to Canada and England in 2002. The Wellington Citadel Band has given two Command Performances atBuckinghamPalace(1968, 2002) and has performed before Pope John Paul II (1986).
Throughout its history, presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ—through music—has remained the central reason for the band’s existence. The collective prayer of the Wellington Citadel Band is that those who hear this music will come into an experience of the love and grace that only God can provide, and that this will increase His kingdom here on earth.
